Why Deep Well Digestion/Sequestration?

Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration has capital costs that are one to two orders of magnitude lower than alternative and traditional options, and operating costs that are also the lowest of available alternatives. Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration can be readily co-located at a wastewater treatment plant, which eliminates all cost, emissions, and road hazards related to trucking. Lastly, Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration can permanently sequester all carbon dioxide and methane emissions created by the breakdown of biosolids, substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions while potentially providing substantial carbon credits. Sequestered methane is also available to be produced back to the surface as a source of renewable energy. Lastly, the processes is fully feedstock flexible, able to take sludge from just after the headworks and at any point in the wastewater treatment process thereafter. Taken together, these advantages position Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration to be the lowest cost option available for municipalities.

Patented technology for beneficial reuse of biosolids and greenhouse gas sequestration that dramatically lowers capital and operating costs.

GeoEnvironment Technologies provides the cleanest, safest, and most cost-effective option for municipal biosolids disposal and industrial wastewater treatment: the deep earth digestion of biosolids. This technique is enabled by our patented slurry injection technique, which allows the emplacement of biosolids within hot, anaerobic deep earth formations, thereby facilitating the breakdown of the residual carbon content and permanently sequestering the carbon dioxide, methane, and other byproducts.

“Deep injection [enabled by slurry injection techniques] is the only option that effectively removes harmful compounds from the biosphere.”
– From a 1998 EPA report

Since July 2008, we have worked with the City of Los Angeles, the Department of Energy, and the US EPA to implement Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration of biosolids using slurry injection at the successful Terminal Island Renewable Energy project (TIRE). This flagship facility has proven the benefits of our technology and paved the way to roll out a green, affordable solution to other cities and municipalities around the country. GeoEnvironment Technologies, now a subsidiary of Advantek Waste Management Services, is working hard to replicate the success of the TIRE project in municipalities around the country and the globe.

Cost Effective Biosolids Management Solutions

Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration of biosolids has capital costs that are one to two full orders-of-magnitude lower than alternative and traditional options, and operating costs that are also the lowest of available alternatives. These facilities can easily be co-located at a waste water treatment plant, eliminating all cost, emissions, and road hazards related to trucking. Lastly, Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration of biosolids can permanently sequester all carbon dioxide and methane emissions created by the breakdown of biosolids, drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions while potentially providing substantial carbon credits. Moreover, the methane that is formed is available for beneficial reuse subject to demand. Taken together, these advantages position Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration of biosolids using slurry injection to be the very best option for long term management of biosolids.

In terms of startup expenditure and ongoing operational costs, our solution outperforms alternative systems.

CapEX: A three-well system sufficient to process up to 100 dry tons per day of biosolids can be installed for less than $10 million. When compared to the several hundred million dollars of capital expense required to set up systems such as drying and pelletizing plants, incineration, gasification, and other waste to energy technologies, Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration provides substantial value to municipalities.

OpEx: Operating costs are also lower than the all other waste to energy technologies, and even lower than trucking and land application / landfilling.

“Conventional methods of sludge disposal such as ocean dumping, land filling and incineration are causing irrevocable damage to the environment. Changing regulations within each state are acting as catalysts driving the wastewater and sludge treatment market. Such regulations are driving end users to search for sludge disposal options other than incineration, land application and ocean dumping. In addition to this is a decrease in the disposal sites for municipal and industrial sludge. These two factors are driving end users to reuse primary and secondary sludge as a sustainable energy source such as fuel for industrial plants.”
– Frost and Sullivan

Environmental Responsibility

Traditional methods of dealing with biosolids and wastewater are expensive and resource-heavy, generally relying on the trucking of waste long distances to rural disposal sites requiring large amounts of land. This also creates dangerous greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change, carry substantial risk of contaminating nearby surface and groundwater, and create potentially offensive odors and nuisances to neighboring populations.

By securely emplacing biosolids into deep earth formations, GeoEnvironment Technologies bypasses these shortcomings. We’ve solved the challenge of responsibly dealing with biosolids and wastewater at substantially lower capital and operating costs than the alternatives. Our technology provides the following benefits:

  • Greater protection of surface and groundwater.
  • Reduced energy consumption.
  • Reduced trucking and associated emissions.
  • Significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Generation and potential recovery of high purity methane.
  • Provides a local solution for urban areas, without relying on distant rural counties.

The world-class scientific and engineering talent behind our Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration solution provides expert oversight and real-time, continuous operational monitoring to ensure that our facilities perform with maximum efficiency and security across the lifetime of the project.

Stewardship and sustainability are serious concerns for local governments and citizens across the world. However, at the same time, municipal budgets are tight as ageing infrastructure drains their resources. With urban populations continuing to swell and our climate continuing to change, it is critical that we identify methods to sustainably manage wastewater and biosolids at significantly reduced costs. When it comes to changing the footprint of municipal biosolids and wastewater management, GeoEnvironment Technologies is leading the way.
