City of Los Angeles Digested Sludge, Biosolids, and Brine Injection Project

The world’s first full-scale demonstration and successful application of this technology was developed for the City of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation. Injection operations commenced in July, 2008, at the Terminal Island Treatment Plant.

Currently, 100% percent of the Digested Sludge generated at this sanitation plant is injected at a depth of about 5000 feet underground. Biosolids management via Deep Earth Digestion / Sequestration has eliminated the need and cost for dewatering and long-distance truck transport to distance rural counties while eliminating the greenhouse gas emissions of doing so. In addition to the digested sludge from Terminal Island, the facility is also injecting Biosolids Wetcake transported from the Hyperion Treatment Plant, reducing its much longer distance truck deliveries. In total, the project handles 20% of all biosolids / sludge produced by the city of Los Angeles. Finally the facility is also injecting a portion of the Reverse Osmosis Brine generated by the plant’s tertiary treatment process.

The process is monitored with advanced geophysical tools, including downhole pressure sensors, fiber optic temperature sensors, periodic geophysical logging, and offset well fluid and gas sampling. The monitoring and analyses confirm containment in the deep target interval, and have verified carbon dioxide sequestration and methane generation.

Bureau of Sanitation’s Renewable Energy Project Wins National League of Cities 2010 Award of Excellence

The City of Los Angeles Terminal Island Renewable Energy (TIRE) biosolids (bio-slurry) injection project has received a National League of Cities (NLC) 2010 Award for Municipal Excellence. The award recognizes cities and towns for outstanding programs that improve the quality of life in America’s communities. The City of Los Angeles accepted its Silver Award for the more than 500,000 population category at the NLC’s Congress of Cities and Exposition in Denver, Colorado. Read more here.

TIRE Project Contractor Outreach

At the TIRE site, we often need the expertise of subcontractors knowledgeable in the areas of welding, electrical work, underground construction, and general well services, in order to perform routine maintenance on our equipment and work site. GeoEnvironment Technologies LLC is committed to finding new MBE, WBE, and DBE certified subcontractors to work with, as well as utilizing the current subcontractors who have been approved for us to use by the city.
